2 Devices For Improved Security On Residential Sliding Security Doors

Blog

Sliding doors are preferred for outdoor use in the residential set-up. They are commonly installed in patio areas thanks to their full-length glass panels that allow for an unobstructed view of the outdoor scenery.

There are several ways through which a homeowner can increase the security of sliding doors around the home. Discussed in this article are two devices that can be used as a means to this end.

Slide-Locking Bars

Professional burglars often have an easy time forcing entry through a sliding glass door. This is because sliding doors can easily be lifted off their tracks using simple tools (e.g. flat-headed screwdrivers), even when the doors are locked. As such, burglars don't necessarily need to smash the glass panel of the door in order to gain access into the house.

Slide-locking bars are installed into the bottom tracks of a sliding door. They make it difficult for anyone to lift the door off its tracks. The lock bars can easily be removed when undertaking maintenance-related activities on the door. However, burglars are seldom lucky enough to have the time it would take to remove the slide-locking bar and to lift the door off its tracks.

Sliding-lock bars often come in the form of wooden dowels or metal bars. They are a relatively affordable option for homeowners looking to improve the security of their residential sliding doors.

Homeowners whose budget for the above-mentioned activity is sufficiently elaborate can choose to have sliding bolts secured to the frame of the door. Installation of such bolts will ensure that the door does not move, even when lifted off its tracks.

Alarm Systems

For the price-conscious homeowner, a door-frame alarm system would be a good choice for improved security. A door-frame alarm system will go off in the event that the glass panel on a sliding door is broken, thereby alerting the homeowner of an attempted forced entry.

For those with sufficient financial means, motion and glass-break sensors would be a wise investment. Unlike door-frame alarm systems, the installation of motion and glass-break sensors doesn't have to be done on either surface of the sliding door or on its frame. These security devices are installed in areas adjacent to the sliding door.

Motion and glass-break sensors can be used alongside door-frame alarm systems for maximum security. The sensors will trigger an alarm in the event that the door-frame alarm system fails to do so (for whatever reason) when there's an attempt to force entry through a security door.

Making life easier with technology

When I was a kid I dreamed that I'd have a robot to help me do all my day-to-day tasks by the time I was grown. Unfortunately we don't have robots around the house, yet, but there are a range of technologies that do make my life much easier. From cookers that help reduce cooking time, to robotic vacuum cleaners and timers to make devices turn on at the right time, there are so many new technologies that can make life around the house much easier. This blog is all about technology for the home. Thank you for stopping by!
