Fixing a Dark or Blurry Picture on a Plasma TV

Blog

In many scenarios, a dark or blurry picture on a plasma TV is the result of poor picture calibration. Calibration settings can usually be accessed with your remote on your TVs' main menu under the Picture options. Other potential picture problems are related to the TV's input source. If addressing these factors doesn't help, the TV probably needs to be serviced or replaced.

Calibrating Brightness

The brightness setting affects what the TV displays as black. A low brightness setting results in darker picture, while a high brightness setting results in more grays. A poor brightness calibration not only distorts blacks and grays, but it also affects the appearance of the rest of the colors on the TV. If your picture appears too dark, it is likely that the brightness is too low.

Calibrating Contrast

The contrast setting affects the brightness of white in the picture. It is often confused with the brightness setting. The higher the contrast, the brighter the TV appears. Setting it too high can wash out the rest of the colors, while setting it too low can make the picture appear too dark to view details. Adjusting the contrast setting higher could resolve your screen's dark problem.

Calibrating Sharpness

The sharpness setting enhances color distinction, making the images look crisper. A blurry screen could indicate that the sharpness level is too low, although setting it too high also distorts the picture so that it looks artificial. Adjusting the setting manually so that it is somewhere in the middle should help the image have a clear, realistic focus. Generally, HDTVs look better with a lower sharpness setting.

Other Calibration Tips

Your picture quality is affected by factors such as different input sources— i.e., cable, the Internet or DVDs. It also looks different in various light settings. Depending on the model you have, the TV could have some form of automatic calibration to address this problem. Nonetheless, you may want to manually adjust the picture calibration for different conditions so your TV displays the best picture in every situation. Take notes about optimal settings once you determine what they are so you can quickly make adjustments when needed.

Adjusting Input Problems

If the problem isn't with your picture calibration, it's probably with the input source. Ensure that you are following the manufacturer's instructions about all connections. Daisy-chaining HDM I cables can significantly distort the picture. If you are connecting your TV to a cable box, use the high-quality DVI and HDMI ports and not the composite connections. High-quality connections ports are long and flat, while composite connections are round. You may need to buy new cables. If you don't have high-quality ports on your box, talk to you cable TV provider. Distortions from other input sources, such as an antenna or satellite dish, could indicate signal weakness, so try different channels or adjust your receiver if you can.

Making life easier with technology

When I was a kid I dreamed that I'd have a robot to help me do all my day-to-day tasks by the time I was grown. Unfortunately we don't have robots around the house, yet, but there are a range of technologies that do make my life much easier. From cookers that help reduce cooking time, to robotic vacuum cleaners and timers to make devices turn on at the right time, there are so many new technologies that can make life around the house much easier. This blog is all about technology for the home. Thank you for stopping by!
